Simple Warrior Cosplay

Seriously, gang… Doesn’t every woman want to feel like a warrior, the master of her domain? Well, bust out that eye-shadow  and create your own version of this easy and impactful photo shoot. Here are a few ideas to help get the inspiration flowing…

Swoon-worthy Words:

Find a song, poem, or quote that makes you want conquer mountains! Not only will it help you narrow down prop choice (if you want to use props), but it will also inform your model regarding the mood you are going for. Ariana Dancu spoke to my soul when she said, “She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. She walked with the Universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings.”

Selecting Your Wardrobe:

Think about how you are wanting to frame your shot – If your photo is waste up, you need not worry about finding swashbuckling pantaloons or a flowing skirt. Layer pieces to add visual interest; scarves, belts, and interesting bralettes can spice up simple tank tops. You can also rent costumes locally if you are craving an elaborate costume, but don’t want to devote too much cold-hard-cash.

Picking Props:

Your props should support your overall theme; make sure any weapons are appropriate for your warrior goddess to avoid a confusing and clunky image. Since my quote makes reference to a ‘pair of wings’, I used a feathered shoulder piece and added a spooky crow in post.

Background & Lighting:

Have an idea of your background prior to your photo shoot. If you’re shooting outdoors, pick a time with diffused light (early morning or golden hour is best). If your adding a background in post, white balance and directional lighting should be strategic so that the overall image looks cohesive. For this impromptu shoot, I simply thumb-tacked scarves on the wall behind my model.

Makeup & Hair Tips:

Thank goodness my model is a very patient woman who sat through a painfully slow makeup application using three colors of powder eyeshadow and liquid foundation. I blended the whole mess with my chubby fingers (Again, my model is a friggin’ Saint!) If I had this to do over again, I would recommend applying creme eyeshadow and liquid foundation with a “beauty blender” to make a smooth color gradient. Regarding hairstyle: when in doubt, choose braids. They add a great texture and stay in place.
